It’s Show Low

Part of Snowflake, Taylor & Heber-Overgaard, our guide to the pioneer towns north of Show Low and the Mogollon Rim to the west.

Snowflake’s pioneer district is best seen from the Stinson Museum at 102 N. 1st East, open Monday to Saturday 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.: the Snowflake Heritage Foundation runs the museum in the 1870s adobe ranch house the town grew from, and its 13-stop walking tour takes in a dozen historic homes in about 1½ to 2 hours. Donations welcome.

The museum fills the adobe ranch house James Stinson built in the 1870s; the National Register nomination dates the building to 1878, with a second building added in 1880. The foundation says the Flake party bought the ranch from Stinson for $12,000, and the house then served for church meetings, school and court. Exhibits cover the area’s prehistoric past, its Hispanic heritage and Mormon pioneer settlement, including the loom Lucy Hannah Flake used to weave cloth and rag rugs. The foundation says the town’s name honours both Erastus Snow and William Flake.

The Walking Tour

The foundation’s self-guided Snowflake Heritage Tour has 13 stops with audio narration; guided home tours leave from the museum. Many tour homes are still lived in, so the foundation asks visitors to respect private property. Highlights:

Every pin here is an estimate, not a surveyed point. A place pin marked "estimated by eye" is our own guess at the spot (a lake, park or town middle); the others use a point from OpenStreetMap (© OpenStreetMap contributors) for the named spot, which can still be off by a few blocks. Event pins sit at the center of the event's town, because we do not have each venue's exact spot. Distances are straight-line, rounded, and will not match driving miles. Dots sit in their compass direction; distance is stretched near the middle so close neighbors stay readable. Events are the next dates from our events calendar, as of October 23, 2026, and each date is the organizer's, not confirmed by us. The same places are listed beside the map.
